A Dubai family residence application depends on the sponsor, the family relationship, the applicant's location and the documents available. Check the current authority requirements before starting, especially for marriage or birth certificates issued outside the UAE.
New application or renewal?
A new family residence application and a renewal are different search intents and different workflows. If your dependent already has UAE residence, use our family visa renewal guide. If you are starting sponsorship for the first time, continue with this guide.
Who can sponsor
Residents can generally sponsor a spouse and children. Whether you qualify depends on your visa category, profession, salary and accommodation, and these criteria can change, so check the current conditions before you apply.
The main steps
- Confirm sponsor eligibility and gather the sponsor's documents
- Prepare and, where needed, attest and translate the family documents
- Submit the entry permit or status-change application
- Complete the medical fitness test when required
- Apply for the Emirates ID and have the visa stamped or issued
Common mistakes
- Applying with an unattested marriage or birth certificate
- Passports that are close to expiry
- Missing or out-of-date tenancy documents
- Starting the process without checking current eligibility rules

Inside-country and outside-country applications
Where the family member is located matters. A dependent outside the UAE normally follows the entry-permit route before completing residence formalities. An applicant already inside the UAE can have different application steps and additional inside-country charges. Always tell the typing provider the dependent's current location before requesting a quote.
Can an investor or partner sponsor family?
Investor and partner residence holders are also relevant sponsor categories. GDRFA documentation lists partnership documentation for partner cases, and investor/partner residence documentation includes a partnership agreement or MOA and trade licence. The exact family-sponsorship checklist depends on the sponsor's residence category and company structure.
Parents need a different checklist
Do not use a spouse/child checklist for parents. Current GDRFA Dubai guidance for parent sponsorship includes an attested tenancy contract suitable for the family size, financial/employment evidence and other case-specific documents. This is why QuickDocs checks the sponsor and relationship before giving a document list.
